 Pioneering regenerative supply chains

It’s no longer good enough for business to be “less bad” by reducing impact alone. That’s why it’s our ambition to pioneer truly regenerative and sustainable supply chains. At CHEP, our purpose is to connect people with life’s essentials every day in a nature positive way. We are working to help create a nature-positive economy with reuse, resilience and regeneration at its core – a truly circular economy.

Circularity Enablers – CHEP is built on circular principles

CHEP Business

CHEP is the backbone of global supply chains. Our purpose is to connect people with life’s essentials, every day: now we’re committing to do that in a nature-positive way. Through the world’s largest pool of reusable pallets and containers, CHEP enables customers’ supply chains to become more circular, sustainable and efficient in terms of cost and use of natural resources.

Our intrinsically circular “Share and Reuse” business model and our active role in thousands of supply chains puts us in a unique position to pioneer regenerative supply chains.

Together, we’ve built more sustainable supply chains

But the time has come to go beyond “better” and become positive.

Our 2025 Targets

Our 2025 Targets

2020 initiates the “decade of action” on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). CHEP’s 2025 targets are our guide to making this vision a reality by focusing our actions where our sustainable business can have the most positive impact.

We’ll work across our value chain to deliver life’s daily essentials while restoring nature and advancing a fairer society.

We’ll focus on three key areas to become Planet Positive, Business Positive and Communities Positive. Learn more here.

Zero Waste World

Zero Waste World

To eradicate waste beyond our core products and solutions while building regenerative supply chains, CHEP has launched the Zero Waste World programme.

Our programme brings together major manufacturers and retailers to co-create and deliver innovation and scalable solutions addressing common challenges with balanced value for both businesses and the environment.

  • It aims to tackle three primary challenges: eliminating packaging wastetransport miles and process waste.
  • The Zero Waste World program leverages CHEP's unique position in the supply chain to help customers create more value, use fewer resources and to do this together.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does “regenerative supply chains” mean?

To regenerate means to restore, replenish and create more value or capital for society and the environment than the business consumes. A regenerative supply chain is therefore based on a model that restores nature and strengthens society instead of destroying value, by going beyond zero impact.

  • What is the circular economy? Why is CHEP circular?

The circular economy aims to eliminate waste and minimize the consumption of resources through their continual reuse. This means looking beyond the current take-make-dispose economic model, and decoupling growth from the consumption of finite resources.

Our business model, known as “pooling,” is based on sharing and reusing all of our pallets, crates and containers throughout the global supply chain. Producers and distributors make use of our platforms when they need them. They are collected by CHEP, inspected and repaired, and sent back to the supply chain to start the cycle again. This is a clear example of circular economy at a global scale, and it is what makes our business model intrinsically sustainable and CHEP one of the most sustainable companies on earth.

  • What is Zero Waste World?

Zero Waste World is a working collaboration launched by CHEP that brings together leading retailers and manufacturers to create smarter and more sustainable supply chains. The Zero Waste World initiative focuses on three main areas:

Eliminating physical waste from single-use packaging to unsaleable products.

Eradicating empty transport miles through collaborative initiatives, from load fill optimisation to collaborative transport solutions.

Cutting out inefficiencies, through supply chain visibility and advanced analytics to process optimisation and automation.

  • What are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were set in 2015 by the international community as part of the United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through which countries of the world collectively pledged to eradicate poverty, find sustainable and inclusive development solutions, ensure everyone’s human rights and generally make sure that no one is left behind by 2030. Seventeen (17) SDGs have been defined, with 169 associated targets, to be reached by 2030. They address the global challenges the world faces and tackle all dimensions of sustainable development, in a balanced and integrated manner. Read more here.

  • What are carbon-neutral operations?

In its simplest form, its when an operation successfully reduces its carbon emissions then balances its remaining emissions with investments that either remove carbon from the atmosphere or reduce the emissions of others.  Our priority is to reduce our emissions first, then sequester carbon through afforestation projects.  Carbon offsets are used as a last resort to achieve net-zero carbon emissions.

  • How is CHEP aligned with the SDGs?

2020 initiates the “decade of action” on the UN SDGs. Our 2025 targets are our guide to leading on the global goals by focusing our actions where our business can have the most positive impact. This is how some of the SDGs are directly impacted by our 2025 targets:

Planet Positive target: Our commitment is to be nature positive by restoring forests, going beyond zero waste and drawing down more carbon than we produce, ultimately becoming a regenerative, nature‑positive business. This target includes Forest Positive, Climate Positive and Waste Positive. Relevant SDGs:

SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy

SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

    SDG 13: Climate Action

    SDG 15: Life on Land

Business Positive target: We will pioneer regenerative supply chains by improving our circular model every year, increasing the environmental benefits in our customers’ supply chains. This target includes Supply Chain positive, Positive Collaboration and Workplace Positive. Relevant SDGs:

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being

    SDG 5: Gender Equality

SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

    SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities

SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

    SDG 13: Climate Action

SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals

Communities Positive target: Our Communities Positive programme will build resilience, promote circularity and account for the connections between society, the economy and nature. This target includes Food Positive, Circular Economy Transformation and Positive Impacts for People and our Planet. Relevant SDGs:

    SDG 2: Zero Hunger

    SDG 4: Quality Education

SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

  • What are scope 1, scope 2 and scope 3 emissions?

Scope 1 emissions are from the direct burning of fuel in a company’s operations.  Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions generated by others to deliver energy (mostly electricity) or other utilities to a company’s operations.  Scope 3 emissions include all other indirect emissions that occur throughout a company’s value chain.

  • What are social and natural capital?

Social capital includes social networks together with shared norms, values and understanding that facilitate cooperation within and among groups (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, 2001).

Natural capital is another term for the stock of renewable and non-renewable resources (e.g. plants, animals, air, water, soils, minerals) that combine to yield a flow of benefits to people. Learn more here.

In order to confirm progress towards our regenerative status, we have a target in place to increase social and natural capital and have committed to using  the Natural Capital Protocol and the Social & Human Capital Protocol to guide us in finding the most appropriate ways of valuing our Natural and Social Capital Impacts and Dependencies.

  • What is Sustainable Supply Chain Management?

Sustainable supply chain management involves integrating environmentally and socially responsible practices into the complete supply chain lifecycle, from product design and development to material selection, (including raw material extraction or agricultural production), manufacturing, packaging, transportation, warehousing, distribution, consumption, return and disposal. Environmentally sustainable supply chain management and practices can assist organizations in not only reducing their total carbon footprint, but also in optimizing their end-to-end operations to achieve greater cost savings and profitability.
